Serine protease inhibitor.
Camostat is an orally active serine protease inhibitor which can inhibit plasmin, kallikrein, thrombin and trypsin, and attenuate pancreatic fibrosis in vivo. Camostat also inhibits influenza virus replication in human tracheal epithelial cells and reduces infection of Calu-3 lung cells by SARS-CoV-2 through inhibition of the serine protease TMPRSS2, required for viral spike protein priming. In mice, camostat was effective in protecting against death following a lethal SARS-CoV infection, with a survival rate of 60%.
