Broad spectrum antibacterial agent.
Pexiganan (MSI 78) is a synthetic cationic peptide and an analogue of magainin 2, the host defence peptide isolated from the skin of the African frog Xenopus laevis. Pexiganan exhibits in vitro broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative, anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and is the first AMP developed into an antibacterial drug and the best-studied AMP to date for therapeutic purposes. Pexiganan shows a barrel-stave type mechanism of membrane disruption or channel formation and exerts its antibacterial effect by forming toroidal pores in bacterial membranes.
